Are you ready for Camp?
The American Diabetes Association’s Diabetes Camps are a lot of fun. There are tons of things to do and new people to meet but going away to Camp is a big deal!
Going to an overnight camp means you’re going to be away from your family. It also means someone other than your parent/guardian is going to be helping you take care of your diabetes. Don’t worry, you’ll be in good hands but...
Are you ready for Camp?
Take a minute to answer the following questions:
- I am excited to go to Camp and meet new friends
- I know it’s going to be hard to be away from my family, my pet, my friends but I’m ready to have fun at Camp
- I am ready to let the Camp staff care for me and know I will get good diabetes care
- I am ready to follow the rules of Camp
- I talked with other kids who have already gone to Camp about their experience
- I am ready to have FUN!
If you answered “yes” to all of the questions, to talk to your parents about Camp and see if you can attend the next session!
If you answered “no” to any of the questions, tell your parents how you feel. Then you can work together to help you feel more ready to go and have fun at Camp!
Read what other kids say about Camp.
Are you worried you’ll get homesick?
Some kids get to Camp then start to miss their family, friends and even their pets. It’s normal to miss the people (and pets) you love and it’s ok to get homesick at Camp.
Usually, campers feel the most homesick at night when everything gets quiet. But once morning comes and you get busy with activities and hanging out with new friends, it gets better.
If you get homesick at Camp, tell your counselor or Camp director. There are lots of people at Camp who can help you feel better.
